A MIGHTY NGUNI NATION IN NORTHERN MALAWI

 

A BIRTHDAY SHOUT-OUT TO INKOSI YAMAKHOSI MBELWA V

Today, the Mzimba Nguni/Ngoni Nation is in a celebratory mood as it's traditional head, King Mbelwa V was born on this day in the 1980s. The current King Mbelwa is of the bloodline of Zwangendaba Jele. 


Current King Mbelwa dressed in his traditional Zulu like attire. 

CHRONOLOGY OF NGUNI INKHOSI YA MAKHOSIS OF MZIMBA.

1.Mhlahlo(M’Mbelwa)Jele: Zwangendabas son from the Munene household.His elder sister was Lomagazi and he was born at Chulu in Malawi in 1841. He reigned from 1855 upto 1891, this 36 years reign is still unrivarled, he died aged 51. 

2.Mbalekelwa Chimphepo-Jele (Chimtunga): born in 1875, he started his reign in 1895 upto 1915 when he was desposed by the British colonialists for forbidding Mzimba men from fighting their wars. He only reigned for 19 years and died aged 49.

3.  Lazalo, Mkhosi, Chikupizya Jele: he was born in 1896 and reigned from 1928 upto 1959. He reigned for 31 years and died aged 63.

A model King: Lazalo, Mkhosi, Chikupizya Jele reigned as King Mbelwa II. It's this same iconic photo that would find itself on the Malawian Kwacha bill. 

4. Mackson, Makamaka, Mthusane Jele: he was born in 1931. He started his reign in 1960 upto 1983. He rested at age 52.

5. Zwangendaba Jele: born in 1954, he started his reign in 1984 upto 2013 when he rested at age 59.

6. Mkhosi Jele: he was born in 1984 and took over from his father in 2014. He is the current King Mbelwa, he rules from his Edingeni headquarters.


The Mbelwa/Mzimba Ngunis at the sacred mountain of Hora which hosts the annual Umthetho Celebrations. The mountain is globally renowned for having the oldest DNA for study; it was for a woman who lived more than 8000 years ago.
